A considered response to the brief.

Barn conversions are at their best when the original building remains part of the experience. The scale of the roof, the texture of the stone and the rhythm of the existing structure all offer something that a new-build interior cannot easily replicate. This farmhouse conversion was approached with that character firmly in mind, combining a contemporary living space with the qualities that make the barn distinctive.

A mezzanine floor adds another layer to the internal layout, creating a separate area while retaining a strong visual connection to the main lounge below. The glazed wall follows the profile of the roof, allowing light and views through the space rather than closing the upper level away behind a solid partition.

The detailing is what brings the scheme together. Exposed stonework, an ashlar surround, feature lighting and carefully considered timber structure all help the new interior feel rooted in the building rather than imposed upon it. These are the points that demand careful coordination on site, where the existing fabric and the new work need to meet cleanly.

The finished conversion is warm, open and full of character. It demonstrates how a well-planned response can preserve the drama of a historic agricultural building while making it comfortable, useful and ready for modern life.

For owners of older buildings, that balance is often the heart of the brief. It is not about freezing a property in time, nor about erasing what makes it special.
