A considered response to the brief.

The starting point for this Colne Valley project was practical: the property had a drainage issue that needed to be resolved. A new sump pump formed the essential first stage, providing the groundwork for a more resilient garden and giving the client confidence to look at the outdoor space as a whole rather than as a collection of separate problems.

Once the drainage work was underway, the brief grew into a wider garden upgrade. This is often the most sensible way to approach a site with changing levels or ageing surfaces: deal with the hidden essentials first, then plan the visible work around a layout that will perform properly for the long term.

The completed works combine a new outdoor arrangement with substantial stone walling and defined terraces. The walls do more than provide a finish; they give shape to the garden, create usable level areas and make the most of the site’s natural changes in height. The material choice also helps the new work sit naturally alongside the existing property.

With the lawn area ready to be completed as the weather allowed, the garden was left with a much stronger framework for everyday use. It is a practical landscape solution, but also a more generous setting for time outside, with the drainage, levels and craftsmanship all working together.

For similar projects, solving the cause of a problem before investing in the visible finish is an important principle. It gives the new landscaping a sound basis and allows the client to enjoy the completed space without worrying that an unresolved issue is sitting underneath it. Here, the functional work and the visual transformation were planned as one connected project.
